About Cabbage Powder

Cabbage powder is an excellent supplement for anyone who wants all the health benefits of cabbage, but who either doesn't like to actually eat cabbage, or who has difficulty fitting one more bulky vegetable into their diet. It's also a great way to consume cabbage every day, instead of only on special soup or stirfry days.

Cabbage powder is an excellent way to introduce Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and B Vitamins into your smoothies, soups, casseroles, and more. Unlike fresh cabbage, cabbage powder won't spoil in the back of your fridge when you forget to make stir fry, and it's easier to hide in your child's spaghetti-o's than shredded cabbage is.

In theory, cabbage powder can also be added to baked goods, such as bread, cake, and cookies, to give your snacking an extra healthy boost.

But before you dive right in, read below to be certain that cabbage is healthy for you.

Health Benefits of Cabbage

There are many health benefits of cabbage. Did you know that a cabbage contains more vitamin C than an orange? As a cruciferous vegetable, cabbages are packed with phytonutrients, which help detoxify the body and may even help to prevent cancer. They are also an excellent source of vitamin K, which helps with healthy blood clotting, helps to prevent bone weakening or fracturing, and helps to prevent calcification of the blood vessels and heart valves.

Cabbages also help to treat peptic ulcers, and provides much needed roughage (helps to excrete waste). They're a good source of fiber, and of B vitamins, which are essential to the nervous system and help to balance moods. Red cabbage is especially thought to help prevent Alzheimer's.

Dangers of Cabbage

Cabbage, as a cruciferous vegetable, is known for suppressing the thyroid if the cabbage is uncooked. Even sauerkraut is merely fermented and not cooked, but, of course, you can cook your sauerkraut.

There are a few cabbage drug interactions that are known. Cabbage may reduce the effectiveness of acetaminophen (Tylenol and such), and may cause problems with asprin, coumadin, and plavix (because of the vitamin K which assists in blood clotting).

Other possible drug interactions are: atorvastatin (Lipitor), diazepam (Valium), digoxin, entacapone (Comtan), estrogen, irinotecan (Camptosar), lamotrigine (Lamictal), lorazepam (Ativan), lovastatin (Mevacor), meprobamate, morphine, oxazepam (Serax), and others.

Check with your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or are taking any of the drugs listed above, or even if you're simply concerned about a possible drug interaction before consuming or supplementing with cabbage or cabbage powder.

Other Ways To Enjoy Cabbage

Cabbage can be used in so many dishes, you could conceivably use it every day and never get tired of it. Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional Irish recipe. Shredded cabbage is often sauteed and added to fried rice or stir fry dishes. Fermented cabbage is sauerkraut. Pepper cabbage makes a great side or condiment, and the apple cider vinegar used in the recipe is exceptionally healthy too (the salt and sugar, not so much). Coleslaw is a typical American side to sandwiches and fish.

You can even saute a bit of shredded cabbage with olive oil and crushed garlic for a tasty side dish (you can combine other greens like spinach or beet greens to give it an extra healthy kick).

You can juice a cabbage along with other vegetables and fruits for a healthy drink to start your day, or shake a bit of cabbage powder into a smoothie or creamy soup.

And speaking of soup, even though the 7 day cabbage soup diet isn't recommended for health, many report that the recipe for it does make a healthy and tasty soup. Though I can't recommend going on the diet itself, this might be a good way to incorporate more cabbage into your diet.

Hi ramkkasturi- I haven't seen cauliflower powder, but there is freeze dried cauliflower. It's called "cauliflower pearls", or at least that's what the brand I'm familiar with calls it.

It's difficult to say whether cabbage or cauliflower is more healthy, though as they're both cruciferous, they should both be avoided by anyone with a thyroid condition.

When comparing nutritional value however, cabbage contains more vitamin k, while cauliflower has more vitamin c. Everything else is pretty similar (manganese, magnesium, folate, b vitamins, omega-3's, and so on).

So, I suppose that if you look at it from the point of view that vitamin c is more essential to over all good health, than vitamin k which is mostly essential for blood health, the cauliflower would be healthier. But only just.

Thanks for making me think! That was a fun question!

Hi Sharon. I'm sorry, but I have no idea what to recommend. If there are any recommended amounts on the bottle/jar, I'd start with that. Otherwise, maybe a teaspoonful for a few days and see how you feel? Supplementing with a food very much depends on your needs, and, unfortunately, I believe that cabbage powder is sold as a food rather than a supplement, which makes it harder to quantify like you could, say, vitamin C. Sorry I'm not more help!
